Help us spread their message to reach far and wide to help those who need extra support in school.
I wrote an open letter on the 10th of April 2018 to our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern which can be viewed here.
Since posting it online, it has had over 40,000 reads and has flooded my email inbox with stories around New Zealand who have all been fighting for equity in education and the proper funding model to support it.
In New Zealand, the only funding available is ORS Funding (Ongoing Resource Scheme) often referred to as "Learning Support" but, it's capped at 1% (MOE says this number is now 1.19%) of all students, and is NOT fully funded.
Since ORS is only a contribution and is reserved for New Zealand’s most severe; students who are blind, have autism, behavioural disorders, and a range of diverse needs are left unaided with schools needing to fund them. To be clear, schools who follow their moral and legal obligations are being crippled financially, while schools who have become creative at excluding students or informally persuading parents to remove their child from school are effectively being rewarded by avoiding the financial pressure. My daughter's school Greerton Village in Tauranga, is truly inclusive and are at a deficit of $118,000 due to this inadequate funding model.
How can we have legislation mandating schools to be inclusive, but not have the proper funding model to support it?
As a country, this pressure will only continue to increase the more we turn a blind eye to what is happening in education. Help us get the attention of our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern so we can start to fix education together.
